jarvis cocker

above photo courtesy of the telegraph uk

i've always been drawn to jarvis cocker, although i have never been a huge fan of his former band from sheffield, pulp. he is brilliant, however and an amazing lyricist. here's an interesting interview i came across on pitchfork> click here.

set your sights on this new site!

my sis, jen lobo has a new website: jenlobo.com. don't be aferred to stop by this virtual menagerie and visit sometime. it's free, which is like 100% less than the cost of a ticket to the zoo and the souvenirs are way better.

she was also highlighted on juxtapoz.com today... check it out. nice job, lil sis!

criterion picture show

so i finally got to see the subtitled crin blanc (janus films/criterion collection) by albert lamorisse. i blogged about it a long time ago here. it was so good, so good, so good!

he also wrote and directed the red balloon, now the inspiration for a major motion picture starring juliette binoche. haven't seen it yet for fear of tainted-ness and disappointment. but thanks for all the blog hits, hou hsiao hsien!

i watched robinson crusoe on mars, too (also from the criterion collection.) it was amazing, although i was skeptical at first because it started off painfully slow... except for the monkey in a spacesuit named mona, that is. cute overload!

hmmmmm. this sounds familiar. yes, i did recently post a jilted love letter to emile hirsch for being in a movie suspected of abusing monkeys, which i heard also flopped- eesh! so is there a statute of limitations on social responsibility and old movies like there supposedly is with wearing vintage fur? rumors, rumors. someone is going to have to look into this... well, hopefully you remember my weakness for animals doing people things. it's my kryptonite.
xo
disclaimer: i do not however eat animals, support circuses or knowingly contribute to the pain and suffering of ANY animal, no matter how cute and entertaining. period.

a passe argument for a passe cause

there i was. standing at the starbucks counter ordering a latte when what should i see but the face of william reid starting up at me. ok, not really but almost.

starbucks, in the true spirit of music commercialism, is now capitalizing on the undying post-punk revival, which they have taken upon themselves to label "the second wave," by peddling this here comp.

jesus and mary chain, echo and the bunnymen, joy division, the smiths... complete with an authentic DIY, cut-and-paste, punk-inspired encasement.

what am i feeling? is it anger? shock? shame?

well, it's a little bit of all of those... whatever, yeah, i am part of the problem. i'm buying a $4 coffee there but my level of consumer responsibility flies out the window when they make the best soy latte i've ever had. they use silk soymilk, which is organic and low in sugar, and they do support fair trade as long as it doesn't get in the way of making a buck or two. blah, blah, blah. look, i'm just tired.

ok, and i'm also pandering. but seriously, where i come from that's called good ol' fashioned market research. hats off to that department. target audience reached. you've done your job well, now how about taking the rest of the afternoon off? as a matter of fact, why don't we combine next friday's pizza party with hawaiian shirt day and call it a done deal. now, who's allergic to canadian bacon? i'll bring the diet coke.

i mean look, would i be happier to see the overly photo-shopped face and ass of the pre-teen pop star of the second, vinyl-clad in various shades of bubblegum pink while i wait for my guilt-ridden cup of joe? well, no. but at this point i'm not really sure which is worse.

we all know open season on new wave was a long time ago. i'm ok with that. ready, aim, fire! the term is ridiculous in itself and at this point there's nothing new about it.

and we could go on and on for hours, or at least several minutes, about the tragic state of the music industry and the fact that the better part of it is an institutionalized sham of a smoke and mirrors business. yeah, whatever. but seriously, i do still want my mtv... back. and yes, starbucks is commoditizing "my" music just like it has commodotized my coffee but that's nothing new, folks. they're just keeping up with the trends that have been trends at least three times now since they originally existed.

so i say eff it. today i am choosing to not care. it's not my generation anymore. nothing is mine. it's never been anybody elses either. i wonder if i could get "hand in glove" as my ringtone... i hope you know that was a joke.

You had me at the antlers

In an effort to avoid being lumped into the cold, dark expanse of the fashion blogging world, I usually refrain from posting about very many fashiony-related things but these Rich-In-Craft bags are too good to be true. came across them on M.I.S.S. Crew. I can't even stand looking at them. It hurts. So like if somehow I planted a row of tomatoes in my new little garden and they mysteriously grew into money trees, I would probably throw down the cash for one of these in every color. I mean, I really couldn't decide which one I wanted more. Ugh.

Check out the website. From what I gathered with my hesitant prodding around for the $$, their prices aren't even listed... You know what that means.
Disclaimer: Those antlers are crafted... as in, not real.

brooklyn-based photographer sarah wilmer has been on my radar for about two years now, since i came across her band the redcoats are coming! (the lovely ladies in the levitation photo below.) sadly, the band is no longer together, but thankfully sarah is still creating magnificent photographs that tell dark and beautiful stories.

sorry emile hirsch,

although i adore you, i will not go see your new movie because your friends at warner brothers beat chimps and probably support sending monkeys into outer space to die. this is not ok with me... or that little guy below.

'sides, i'd rather watch escape to chimp eden.

The Man Who Laughs (with live accompaniment by Plastic Crimewave, Ariel Pink and Jimi Hey)

Co-Presented by Arthur Magazine
Arthur proudly presents live scores to both the classic 1928 German expressionist film The Man Who Laughs and Georges Méliès’ classic turn-of-the-century silent short A Trip To The Moon. Based on the Victor Hugo novel, The Man Who Laughs is a moody masterpiece by director Paul Leni, a tragic melodrama starring Conrad Veidt (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) as an abandoned 17th-century British aristocrat disfigured at a young age by gypsies to have a freakish eternal grin. Performing the soundtrack will be an ensemble of Chicago’s own Plastic Crimewave aka Steve Krakow (who also writes and draws the Galactic Zoo Dossier magazine for the Drag City label), and locals Jimi Hey (former drummer for Beachwood Sparks) and Ariel Pink, the lo-fi pop wunderkind behind Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. Also DJing before and after the films will be Frankie Delmane of the Teenage Frames.
The Man Who Laughs Dir. Paul Leni, 1928, DVD, 110 min.

karl marx was born on cinco de mayo

this day also celebrates the victory of the mexican army over the french in the battle of puebla, may 5, 1862. so while american college kids all over the country are out drinking coronas, eating the worm and surely having deep political discussions about the significance of this moment in mexican history, take a look at some other noteworthy events that share this special day by clicking here.

napoleon bonaparte died on may 5 as well. bad day for the french all around.

art talk

visited the walker art center here in minneapolis last night to hear a lecture given by jo jackson, chris johanson, and with some help from their adorable little dog raisin moccasin miotis.

(above: jackson/below: johanson)

they did a great job. the talk was less about processes of their art -- they actually shyed away from those heavy discussions -- and was more about living life as artists together and what it means. they did show some of their collaborative pieces and were very humorous about the whole thing.

quotable quotes:

"i don't like goals. i don't really have goals." -- chris johanson, when asked about what their long-term goals are as artisits. he followed this up by explaining that he likes things the way they are now and simply wants to continue the way things have been. i liked this. i realized i don't like goals either. i think they get in the way of doing NOW. daily goals are ok. like right now my only goal is to get rid of my coffee maker that keeps making this really irritating cracking sound all morning, every morning. just me and the coffee maker. it's driving me nuts.

"you just do your thing, and that is winning." -- jo jackson, in explaining the diverse community at adobe books in s.f., the place they both say they really came from. she told a story about a schizophrenic vietnam vet that influenced the value system they still have today. he fed the pigeons all over the city every day and even the cockroaches around the bookstore. that was his job, along with putting out a daily "newspaper" that was an intelligent and articulate reporting of things he had experienced in the war like the revelation of jesus christ and other schizophrenic-like subject matter. but that's what he did. that was his thing and he was good at it. he did it every day. it didn't matter that it wasn't important to anyone else. their message: just do YOUR thing and you win. i liked that, too.

they have an art show tomorrow, may 3, 6-11pm at art of this gallery (3506 nicollet ave. minneapolis) it's called conclusions on boundaries. they're also featured in the beautiful losers documentary, directed by aaron rose.
